Harold Siddle "Hal" Johnston (born October 11, 1920, Woodstock, Georgia ; died October 20, 2012, Kensington, California) was an American scientist who studied chemical kinetics and atmospheric chemistry. He earned a chemistry degree from Emory University in 1941, and a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in chemistry and physics in 1948. He joined the faculty at U.C. Berkeley in 1957 and was dean of the College of Chemistry from 1966 to 1970. He authored or co-authored more than 160 technical articles, as well as the influential book, Gas Phase Reaction Rate Theory, published in 1966. He is best known for his landmark paper, published in "Science" in 1971, showing that environmental pollutants might cause substantial depletion of the Earth's ozone layer.
